Pullman: Golden State Shopping dates 1953 SP Golden State Pullman Golden Mission Don Munger Photo By 1953 the Socony red of the Golden State paint scheme had proven to be no match for the hot southwest desert sun. The color faded to a less than appealing salmon shade. Southern Pacific chose to repaint the cars into the paint scheme of the 1950 Sunset Limited. The red stripe with black outlines was made to match the Budd built cars with their higher roof line. In 1958 SP made this scheme the system standard for all passenger cars (minus the black outline) This caused a problem for the Shasta equipment with its' taller windows. The stripe was moved to the roof line for most Coast and Shasta cars. This caused an unfortunate mismatch of stripe when the different cars were assigned to the same train. SP 9056 ex Golden Dawn. repainted to the Golden State version of the Sunset Ltd scheme. Don Munger Photo Shop record April 30, 1953 to January 26, 1955 by release date.
A very comprehensive article on this train and its' cars appeared in the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society publication Trainline, Spring 1999 issue #59. If you have any questions, comments, information or pictures to add, send them to: |
