Pullman cars assigned to the New York Central Railroad were usually
shopped at the Buffalo, New York repair facility. The UP-SP-C&NW San
Francisco Overland pooled sleepers with the New York Central Railroad for
New York City-San Francisco trans-continental service through the city of
Chicago during this period and these cars, especially the 10-6 River
series cars, probably were shuttled into and out of that train to the
shops.
In June of 1956 one of New York Central's premier round-end
observations, Wingate Brook, came west for a complete refurbishing. It
received more than just the standard mattress replacement and interior recoat.
The interior was completely redone with new carpet, plush, curtains, tiling,
center lamps, reading lamps and brakes. The 41-C trucks were replaced with
41-C-11. Its' stainless steel finish was relettered using diagram
CED-4494E.
In 1958 NYC withdrew all it's sleeping cars from Pullman lease and
operated the cars themselves. When Amtrak took over most passenger service in
the US on May 1, 1972, Wingate Brook Became Amtrak 3260. The car was
eventually sold to Kasten Railcar Service and survives today. |
